Hash House a-no-go!

Hash House A Go Go is a popular brunch place in Hillcrest, San Diego. When we were meat eaters, it was our go to place for big portions and good food. As vegetarians, it was… to say the least underwhelming. With a lack of options and the food being somewhat mediocre this time around, it definitely did not live up to the legacy that we had cemented in our minds as one of our (no pun intended) go to places.

Linked above is the menu. We went during dinner hours for the first time and was shocked by the number of options for us. We chose between the only two listed with Dasia ordering the Grilled cheese sandwich and a side of Tomato basil soup served with a side of potatoes and Kendall ordering the Mushroom Hash. And of course we had to order some margaritas! Before our food was brought out, we were served two complimentary soft, warm biscuits smothered in honey with a side of butter which happened to be the best part of the meal.

Dasia’s thoughts: As stated above, I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich served with tomato basil soup and a side of potatoes. I wasn’t thrilled about my choice but since it was so simple, I figured it had to be tasty. When the food arrived, I noticed my sandwich was so thick it was two sandwiches stacked instead of one. The cheese was overcooked and brown. The soup tasted like a mouthful of basil and lacked overall seasoning. Very underwhelming. I’d rate this meal a 5/10 because at least I liked the potatoes.

Kendall’s Thoughts: As you know i got the mushroom hash. The hash came with baby portabella mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke, and goat cheese. This was all accompanied by potatoes and some scrambled eggs. The dish had a decent overall flavor profile. It had some nice savory taste coming in from the mushroom and the artichoke, while also adding in some nice tartness from the tomatoes and the goat cheese. My problem with the dish started when I got into the potatoes. It seemed to me that they were cut much too large in comparison to everything else on the plate and when you combine that with the lack of seasoning throughout the food it was, to say the least, underwhelming. The scrambled eggs were insignificant to the dish and pretty much disappeared on the plate. I think that there was a lot of potential but the food did not live up to my hopes. For me id give it a solid 6/10, It wasn’t terrible but there was definitely some room for improvement. The fruit was great though!

Closing thoughts: Due to the fact that we had two options and both dishes lacked seasoning, we give Hash House a-go-go a C rating. On the dinner menu, there weren’t enough options to justifying coming back. As always, we encourage you to give it a try for yourself and let us know what you think! 1. Yikes, the lack of options astounds me. That is such a well known place in San Diego, you would think there would be more available to vegetarians.
